Internal Family Systems

What are Internal Family Systems?

Internal Family Systems theory respects all aspects of the self equally and makes the assumption that our fundamental nature is positive and it does not attempt to change who we are. Instead, it seeks to comprehend better why we are the way that we are. This fundamental idea fosters a sense of safety that allows us to see and value the wisdom of our emotional and sensed experience without fear of judgment.

The goal of IFS is to access the authentic Self that is similar to the idea in Contemplative Psychotherapy’s concept of our Buddha nature/ basic goodness.  It is comprised of inner wisdom and self healing energy that has been obscured at times by the parts that want to protect us. Transformation is made possible by gradually making peace with your various parts and cultivating safety so that the Self can lead the way.
